About*

I am a self-taught Independent Filmmaker from Colombo, Sri Lanka. I have 12 years of experience in Directing and Producing short films, documentaries, animation short films and motion graphic novels. I started getting involved in filmmaking because I feel a spiritual connection with cinema. I try to express emotions of the deep, inner world and to register women's voices in my works. I have received international awards for my short films. I am the first Sri Lankan female filmmaker coming from the minority Upcountry Tamil community. I am a highly creative person with multitasking abilities who strives to create impactful works of production.

I joined Television industry & advertising industry as a Producer, learning through field experience. Simultaneously I started learning from international film platforms. I started making short films and applying to international learning platform for improving myself. In 2020, I attended Berlinale Talents. I started a production company called “Big Eyes Cinemas'' and made a micro budget short film. After that I made a few documentaries and Motion Graphic Novel, Books and Web comics. It is an independent company whose works focus primarily on registering the voices of the minority community.

My first feature film project ‘46 Mondays’ has been selected for Dhaka International Screenplay Lab for international pitching.

Two poor women living in Colombo, face various hardships during the tense period of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009 to collect Rs.1000 every week and travel to Boossa Prison in Southern Sri Lanka for 46 consecutive Mondays.

A 14-year-old pregnant girl from nowhere arrives in a foggy and mystic hillside village. She gradually gets to know the mystic forces in the forest and the reasons behind the mysterious persecutions on the village people.

one nation -motion graphic novel series

Motion Graphic Novels and books titled ‘One Nation’. I made 5 Motion Graphic Novels for this project- Treasure Land, Red Balloon, Ghost Doctor, Kuttu and Island story. In this Graphic Novel Project, I have created strong and emotionally deep female leads, representing minority communities. This is a first Motion Graphic Novel in Tamil in Sri Lanka.

Generations

2019

‘Generations’ is the story of three women from three different generations. The film explores how domestic violence shapes the psyche of women from different generations. The family system that runs on patriarchy and conservatism is the root cause of domestic violence. With time and modernization, women’s lives evolve with the social and economic changes. However, the system doesn’t change. This story showcases this oppression focusing on three women from different generations, educational & economic backgrounds and life experiences. It will focus on how each one of them reacts differently to the abuse.

By the sea

After being kidnapped and sexually abused for years a girl is rescued and reunited with her mother. But the girl undergoes post-traumatic stress. The mother tries to help her recover and get back to a normal life. As the struggle to return to a normal life continues in the house by the sea, the only companion the mother and daughter have is the sea itself.

Sexual harassments inside homes are buried away from the society due to cultural norms, fear for humiliation of relationships and family infrastructure. This short film reflects the ignorance of people who perceive their society as peaceful only by being deaf to the hoarseness of sexual assaults inside the home.
